Election Day & The Spuds
As everyone from the UK (or in general anyone who has not been sat in a cave disconnected from global media) knows, its election day tomorrow (or today I should say, writing in the wee hours of Thursday, May 6th). Today the UK electorate will shape what happens to this country for the next 4-5 years. And as far as I am concerned, if the country gets this wrong, what is happening in Greece right now could be happening in a town centre near you not too far off in the future.
We all have a choice. I would urge anyone who reads this to use that choice to support growth, and not cuts. Just as important, vote for change, but electoral reform, not change for changes sake.
If David Cameron and the Tories achieve a majority this country will be at very serious risk of a double dip recession which could last the length of the next parliament, making the previous recession look like a stroll in the park. If the Tories are forced to align with the Liberal Democrats in the event of a hung parliament, then there may be some degrees of reform and sanity (and Trident will get replaced, my one major disagreement with Lib Dem policy). Even better still, if as the evening standard predicts, the Tories and Labour end up with identical numbers of seats or very close to it, then a Labour/Lib dem coalition remains the most likely. Any event that denies the Conservative party outright power is a result crucial to the continued economic recovery of the UK.
Whatever happens, I would encourage everyone to use their vote. People think they cannot make a difference, so why bother voting. But if everyone votes, they can make a difference, especially in seats where majorities are no more than a couple of hundred. People not being bothered to vote in those seats could ultimately decide the entire election, so please vote if you are registered, no matter who you vote for.
On an entirely different note, The scum from down the Tottenham High Road have managed to grab fourth place in the Premiership after beating Man City. Oh how we are never going to hear the end of this, despite the fact this is our 12th or 13th season qualifying for the Champions League in a row. What we cannot let happen, by any means, is for those tossers to grab 3rd place from us by continuing our long list of April bad performances against what I hope will be Fulham reserves. If the spuds managed to nick 3rd place, it would be on t-shirts and commemorative plates for the next 20 years, taking the place of any actual silverware they would win of course. So come on Arsenal, sort it out, put a few goals past Fulham, and lets look forward to Spurs drawing Celtic or a Spanish team in the CL qualifiers and ending up back in the Europa League where they belong.
One last thing, if any Tottenham supporting Tories read this, Im not going to be very popular. Tough shit :)
